94 Points for our Syrah Three Creek Vineyard!

The Wine Enthusiast has graced our very limited, single vineyard Syrah from Three Creek Vineyard with 94 points.  Below is what Steve Heimhoff had to say about this lovely wine.

“For sheer deliciousness, it’s hard to beat this Syrah. It shows intensely concentrated blackberry, cherry and liqueur flavors, with rich, smoky oak complexities, and the mouthfeel is pure velvet. For all the richness, the wine finishes dry and elegant. Compellingly good, and a worthy alternative to a great Napa Valley Cabernet.”

2010 RGB white blend

A wonderfully crisp, dry white blend of Roussanne and Grenache Blanc that is perfect for summer sipping.  There are no “Californicated” flavors of oak or buttery malolactic here!

Our Recipe Philosophy

We feel fortunate to be able to earn our living doing what we love and running a small family-owned business. The one drawback, however, can be lack of time. This can create a bit of a conundrum; we love good food, but rarely have time to prepare it. That’s where having wonderful friends who are passionate about cooking comes in and where being a winemaker is handy. After a long day of bottling wine in Los Olivos, there’s nothing better than going to a friend’s home for a delicious homemade dinner. They know we appreciate the food, and they also know we’re likely to bring some tasty wine!

Rather than share fancy restaurant-style recipes with you that take hours and hours of preparation, we’ve asked our friends to share some of their favorite, reliable recipes with you. These are real recipes, made by normal people – dishes a non-professional chef can prepare in his or her own kitchen. Of course, that doesn’t mean we won’t occasionally pepper them with a menu item from one of our favorite Santa Ynez Valley chefs too…

Oh, and we might suggest an Andrew Murray Vineyards wine to pair with the recipe too.

Let us know what you think – and we’d love to post some of your favorites too.  If you have a special recipe that you’d like to share, email it along with a photo to: info@andrewmurrayvineyards.com.

Frau’s Halibut with Thai Banana Salsa (Serves 4)

Our Swedish friend, whose nickname is Frau (don’t ask), claims to not know how to cook, but we beg to differ.  She and her husband have traveled extensively in Asia, so many of her dishes are Asian-inspired.

Frau’s Halibut with Thai Banana Salsa (Serves 4)

Frau's Halibut with Thai Banana Salsa

For Halibut & Marinade:

  • 2 pounds halibut
  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh squeezed if you have it)
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • Splash of olive oil
  • ½ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 tbsp chopped ginger (many markets carry this in a jar in the produce section – look for Christopher Ranch – fresh is fine, just more work)

    Chopped Ginger

Thai Banana Salsa:

  • 4 firm bananas
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro for garnish
  • 2 tbsp Thai fish sauce
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 2 tbsp orange juice (fresh is best)
  • 2 tbsp light brown sugar
  • Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce to taste
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

Preparation:

Mix marinade ingredients together and marinate halibut for a minimum of 12 hours.

Slice bananas (about 1/8 inch thick).   In separate bowl, combine remaining ingredients, then pour over bananas and gently combine.

Bake halibut at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes (depends on thickness, check for doneness).

Serve over coconut rice, and with our Andrew Murray Vineyards 2010 RGB white wine blend or our 2008 Esperance red wine blend.  Enjoy!

Root Causes Launch

When: Sunday, June 19, 2011 – Sunday, June 26, 2011

Where: AndrewMurrayVineyards.com

The Scoop:
Andrew Murray Vineyards launches its Root Causes giving program to benefit Storyteller Children’s Center of Santa Barbara, CA. The details are listed on our Root Causes page, but the bottom line is that Storyteller will receive 30% of all online sales during the week of June 19-26 (just in time for 4th of July celebrations!) and $100 for each new wine club member sign-up as well. We’re getting a special flat shipping rate in California of $10 for 0-6 bottles and $20 for 7-12 bottles to sweeten the deal.

One of the best aspects of this program is that it requires very little work on the part of the typically under-staffed beneficiary! We just need to spread the word via email, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. and encourage people to buy some great wine. If you want to try out our wines in advance, you can find them at East Beach Wine in Santa Barbara (1114 State Street #24 – in the La Arcada Mall), or pop into Los Olivos and visit the AMV tasting room (2901-A Grand Avenue).

Robert Parker, Jr. (The Wine Advocate) has referred to Andrew Murray Vineyards as ‘A shining star in the Santa Barbara firmament’, and AMV wines consistently bring home high marks from the critics (range of 89-94 from The Wine Advocate, The Wine Enthusiast, The Rhone Report). They are frequently compared to French Cotes du Rhone, and French Crozes-Hermitage.

Storyteller Children’s Center Named Inaugural Recipient of Root Causes

Storyteller Children’s Center of Santa Barbara, California has been named the inaugural beneficiary of Andrew Murray Vineyards’ new giving program, ‘Root Causes’. Andrew and his wife Kristen were introduced to Storyteller when they attended the Storyteller Gala a few years ago in Santa Barbara. They are firm believers in Storyteller’s program.

Storyteller Children’s Center provides quality, tuition-free early childhood education for homeless and at-risk children in Santa Barbara County, as well as comprehensive support services for their families. Parents must pursue work or attend school while their children are enrolled in the program. Itʼs a win-win!

Root Causes™ Giving Program

Kristen and I were fortunate to have been raised by parents who were excellent philanthropic role models. They instilled in us the notion that volunteering and contributing to one’s community should be as natural as breathing.

Like most of you, we have worked on fundraising events and capital campaigns, served on boards of trustees, and donated money (and wine) to our favorite non-profits over the years. In conjunction with launching our new website, we are also launching a focused giving program that will allow Andrew Murray Vineyards to help you, our loyal customers, raise money for your favorite charities.

Our goal is to leverage social media and the Internet to help you help your own community. It’s our way of thanking you for enjoying our wines, and getting to feel really good about it in the process.

The program is called Root Causes™, because just as we believe that great wine starts at the root of the vine, we also believe that to solve community problems, we must start at the root of the issue. In particular, we believe that if we can help children get a healthy, enriched, safe start in life, we might just prevent them from making poor choices in the future.

Here’s how Root Causes™ works:

  • Andrew Murray Vineyards will periodically solicit requests for donation recipients from wine club members.
  • For one week, 30% of all online wine sales will be donated to the selected non-profit*.
  • For that week, $100 will be contributed for each new wine club sign-up(with a one-year minimum commitment)**.
  • By sharing the program via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, email, etc., you can garner the support of others who care deeply about your charity.
  • Our inaugural recipient of Root Causes™ is Storyteller Children’s Center, a pre-school for homeless and at-risk children in the Santa Barbara, California area. Storyteller provides quality, tuition-free early childhood education for homeless and at-risk children in Santa Barbara County, as well as comprehensive support services for their families. Parents must pursue work or attend school while their children are enrolled. It’s a win-win!
